Top 10 Medicare facts you should know

  1. Help ensure coverage starts by the time you turn 65 by signing up in the first three months of the initial enrollment period.
  2. Medicare is divided into three parts; Part A, Part B and Part D.
  3. Part C, known as Medicare Advantage, is a combination of Part A and B.
  4. Original Medicare (Part A and B) is offered through the Federal Government.
  5. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered through private insurance companies.
  6. You have to add Part D, prescription drug coverage, onto your Original Medicare Plan or your Medicare Advantage Plan.
  7. Medic Gap, also called a Medicare Supplemental Plan, can help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs expenses Medicare Parts A and B don’t pay.
  8. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is the same across the United States.

What is the Open Enrollment Period and when does it start?  The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) happens every fall. During OEP you have the opportunity to change your health coverage and your health coverage provider without penalty. If a person is satisfied with their plan, they don't need to do anything.

Is the Open Enrollment Period the only time that I can change my health plan options?  In most cases, the fall Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is the only time you can pick a new Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plan, so be sure to review your options.
